What's AutoFeed?

Do you know of any web site that doesn't provide a RSS/Atom feed? Do you need to check it periodically for new content?
Then AutoFeed is the tool you just need!

AutoFeed creates virtual feeds by automatically checking the web sites you want and deciding wether they have new content or not.

It pretends being very user-friendly with an intuitive GUI (see screenshot below). Just insert the URL in the box (change protocol [http/https] if necessary) and press the AutoFeed button, and the feed will be created and checked often.

Download

You can browse and download all releases done until now at the download page of the AutoFeed project in sourceforge. As long as the project gets more stable, I plan on creating OS-specific releases. That shouldn't be too difficult because the project is being developed in the Java language. As I say, please stay tuned (-:

News

September 2008: Alpha version released

Alpha version (0.1.0) has been released! It's steel under deep development but a basic functionality is already offered. Enjoy & share!

August 2008: Project creation

I declare this project officially inaugurated. It's started in pre-alpha state and will continue as such until I finish the main core (which is almost done).  Then I'll update its state to alpha and make the first public release, and will post Help wanted jobs in sourceforge. You can of course offer your help before that - please use sourceforge tools for that

Features

  • AutoFeed is able to fetch web periodically and compare the content download to the previously stored.
  • http and https protocols are supported
  • Feeds are now persistend: they're saved and loaded automatically (to and from ~/.autofeed folder).
  • Tested in Linux and Windows. Report if it works/it's broken on your OS!

Use Suggestions

When I first conceived this project, the kind of web site that I thould would be target of AutoFeed was Scholarship anouncement pages or Exam score lists. There are of course many other possible uses for this application, and I would love you to tell me which. Please use the user forum

Support & Contact

Every form of feedback is valuable. Please post all your commentaries (good and bad), bug reports, feature request in the AutoFeed user forum at sourceforge. I think that is the best way for a small project like this one to build up a knowledge database. I might change this if the project grows enough, though.

Help Wanted

Like any other opensource project, this one needs your help. If you liked the application or just want to improve it, you don't need to be a software developer to help! Artists, translators, testers and anyone would like to join the AutoFeed team and help are and will always be welcome.
Of course, developers are also needed.
Tell us about you and what you want to do at the user forum. I think I don't have to say that everyone helping will for sure be included in the credits list (unless they don't want to).
